Farm 2 School

The Cheatham County School District was awarded a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm 2 School grant for the 2022-2023 school year. 

In partnership with the Northwest Tennessee Local Food Network based in Martin, the district worked to develop school and district Farm 2 School initiatives through the creation of “Grow Cheatham,” an action plan to advance local sourcing of nutrient rich produce and protein, provide economic impact locally, and increase education about food production and healthy lifestyles. 

School-based activities, including field trips, school farming practices, and education on food waste and recycling, were also key components embedded in the grant.

October is Farm 2 School Month. In October 2022, our schools hosted several activities for students and the community.

The district partnered with well-known Farm 2 Table chef Hal Holden-Bache on this initiative. Holden-Bache lives in Kingston Springs and owns Lockeland Table restaurant in East Nashville. 

The district hopes this grant will allow us to make a long-term impact in the nutrition of our students and the local agricultural economy in Cheatham County.
